Sharon Cannon
I didn’t start painting until later in life—after I retired, when I finally gave myself permission to make a mess and see what happened. I work mostly in oils, often with palette knives, rags, or my fingers—anything but a brush. I love using colors that clash or surprise. There’s no plan when I start; I just follow what feels right in the moment. Color is everything to me. I like the freedom of not knowing where a painting will go. Sometimes I struggle with self-doubt, but I try to stay open to accidents and unexpected turns. That’s where the interesting stuff lives. My work is about feeling, risk, and letting go. My work includes large modular installations created with sometimes unusual, sometimes mundane objects like bricks and paper, embroidery and wood along with traditional acrylic paint, watercolor and porcelain.
